Export Questions We Hear Often
When do I need to file an export declaration?
Commercial exports valued at CAD $2,000 or more destined to countries other than the United States generally require an electronic declaration through CERS before export. Some controlled goods require reporting regardless of value.
Do exports to the United States need a CERS declaration?
Most goods exported directly to the U.S. for consumption there do not require an export declaration, though permits and other requirements may still apply depending on the goods.
What happened to the B13A form?
The paper B13A and the CAED system were retired by the CBSA in 2020. The export reporting obligation is now met electronically through CERS. If a carrier asks for a “B13,” they need your CERS transaction number.
Who certifies origin under CUSMA?
The exporter, producer, or importer may complete the certification of origin. There is no prescribed government form, but required data elements must be included. We prepare compliant certifications for eligible goods.
