Import Questions We Hear Often
Do I need a customs broker to import into Canada?
No — importers may clear their own goods. Many businesses use a licensed broker to handle CBSA submissions, classification, and accounting on their behalf, particularly when importing regularly or at multiple ports.
Can you clear goods at any Canadian port of entry?
Yes. Traders is licensed to operate at every Canadian port of entry.
What is a non-resident importer?
A business outside Canada that imports goods into Canada as the importer of record, without a physical Canadian presence. We support non-resident importers with account setup and clearance.
What do I need before my first shipment?
Typically a Business Number with an import program account, a completed agency agreement authorizing your broker, and commercial documentation for your goods. Registration in the CBSA’s CARM Client Portal is also required — see our CARM Resources. Our team can walk you through the setup.
